Wheelchair maneuvering clearances in an alcove require a minimum width of 36 inches with a depth greater than 24 inches for a forward approach, and a minimum width of 60 inches with a depth greater than 15 inches for a parallel approach, per California Building Code 11B-305.7. Vertical clearance beneath stairs requires a maximum height of 27 inches for barriers or a minimum overhead clearance of greater than 80 inches, per CBC 11B-307.4.
