An enlarged steel guardrail and handrail assembly is mounted to a stair stringer. A one and one-half inch diameter standard steel pipe post is welded to the top flange of a painted steel channel stringer at a maximum spacing of four feet on center. The guardrail features a one and one-half inch diameter standard steel pipe top rail and one and one-quarter inch diameter intermediate horizontal members spaced evenly such that a four-inch diameter sphere cannot pass through. A separate one and one-quarter inch diameter standard steel pipe handrail is supported by a formed bracket attached to the post. The concrete-filled metal pan tread connects to the channel stringer with a one and one-quarter by one and one-quarter by three-sixteenths inch angle support welded to both the stringer and the metal pan.
