The planting pit is excavated to twice the size of the rootball with scarified sides and a lightly compacted soil mix at the base. The tree is positioned with the trunk flare one inch above finished grade while removing the wire basket and burlap from the top and sides of the rootball. Backfill consists of a soil mix watered in six-inch layers without tamping, topped with three inches of mulch and excess soil removed at the root collar for landscape architect inspection. Tree stakes are driven outside the root ball with a minimum of two per tree, extending to half the height of the tree and secured using a one-inch rubber tree chain.
