A 1-1/2 inch diameter metal guardrail penetrates a built-up roofing assembly over a plywood deck and 4x6 framing. Waterproofing is achieved using a twenty-four gauge galvanized iron flashing sleeve primed on both sides, secured with a 2-inch wide cinch band and caulk, and sealed with lead flashing. Roof cement and two plies of fiberglass felt stripping set in hot asphalt provide base flashing protection over the roof membrane. The metal flange of the flashing is secured to the plywood deck with 3/8-inch head nails spaced at 4 inches on center and staggered.
