The transition between a rated wall and a rated ceiling assembly uses CH studs sized as required for the span and J-track framing. A one-inch gypsum board shaft liner is installed alongside a one-inch ripper board as necessary. A vapor barrier is provided between conditioned and non-conditioned spaces where required. Layers of five-eighths inch Type-X gypsum board are applied to achieve the required fire-resistance rating, using one layer for one-hour fire-resistance ratings and two layers for two-hour fire-resistance ratings. Fire sealant is applied at the joints, and ratings are maintained below the rated ceiling assembly.
