A steel guardrail assembly comprises a vertical post with a top guardrail and a side-mounted handrail. A 1 1/4-inch nominal pipe size steel handrail is supported by a 3/8-inch steel bracket attached to the post, maintaining a 1 1/2-inch clear distance from the post face. Horizontal cables pass through the vertical post at equal spacings designed to provide less than 4 inches of clear space between strands. The top of the guardrail is positioned 3 feet 6 inches above the stair nosing or floor, while the handrail centerline is set 3 feet 0 inches above the nosing or floor.
