A wide-flange column connects to framing beams using a bolted shear tab and continuity plates at the top and bottom flange locations. Continuity plates match the width of the column and have a thickness matching the thickest beam flange plus one-quarter inch, welded with five-sixteenth-inch fillet welds to the web and complete joint penetration welds at the flanges. Backing plates are permitted to remain on complete joint penetration welds, which must be executed prior to bolt tensioning. Grade 50 steel is specified for all continuity plates.
