A gusset plate penetrates into a slotted hollow structural section brace member with a maximum depth of two and a half inches. A drill hole matches the slot width at the interior end of the slot. The hollow structural section is slotted one-sixteenth to one-eighth of an inch wider than the gusset plate thickness.
