A combined guard and handrail assembly is anchored adjacent to a floor slab. The main guard rail extends to an overall height of 3'-6" above the floor finish, incorporating a top rail and multiple horizontal intermediate handrail members spaced at regular intervals. Individual rails measure two inches in diameter. Horizontal spacing between bars is restricted so that a four-inch diameter sphere cannot pass through any opening up to a height of 34 inches.
