An HSS 10x4 structural steel member connects to the web of a W27 wide-flange beam via a 10-inch wide by 1/2-inch thick face plate welded to the HSS end. A 1/2-inch thick stiffener plate is welded inside the W27 section with a 1/4-inch fillet weld, and the face plate is secured to the W27 with a 5/16-inch top and bottom fillet weld typical. The HSS member extends past the W27 flange by 1/2 inch at both the top and bottom.
