Shrubs are installed in a planting hole sized to a minimum of twice the root ball dimensions with a compacted subsoil pedestal formed at the base to prevent settling. The top of the root ball is set two inches above the original grade, surrounded by an earth-mounded watering basin and a three-inch mulch layer. Soil backfill is amended with organic matter to reach a five percent dry weight and includes a soil moisture retention additive installed per the manufacturer. Plastic containers are removed entirely, while burlap is stripped from the top one-third of the root ball prior to backfilling.
