This interior architectural detail constructs a light cove shelf using wood blocking attached to a gypsum board ceiling assembly. A five-eighths-inch gypsum board forms the horizontal and vertical surfaces of the cove, framed with metal studs and finished with an L-trim at the outside corner. A light fixture sits atop the wood blocking inside the recessed shelf, positioned one inch away from the vertical wall surface. The lower gypsum board ceiling drops eleven and one-half inches below the upper level, creating a six-and-three-eighths-inch tall vertical light shield at the cove edge.
