Handrail extensions at the top and bottom of stairs must comply with accessibility standards such as CBC 11B-505.10.2 and CBC 11B-505.10.3. The top handrail extension requires a minimum length of twelve inches beyond the top riser, measured from the point directly above the top nosing. The bottom handrail extension requires a continuation equal to the tread depth plus twelve inches minimum, measured from the bottom nosing. Vertical supports anchor the handrail assembly to the stair construction.
