A non-rated wall penetration detail shows a duct passing through a partition with five-eighths inch gypsum board framing secured by metal runners at the top and bottom of the duct. The perimeter joint is sealed using a one-and-a-quarter-inch diameter polyethylene foam backing rod or a closed-cell neoprene sponge rod, finished with two continuous beads of non-hardening resilient caulk on all four sides. Typical duct insulation wraps the duct as specified by the wall construction plans, maintaining a minimum four-inch and one-inch clearance alongside a mandatory five-inch minimum separation between adjacent penetrations.
