An HSS 4x4 diagonal brace connects to a vertical hollow structural section column and horizontal beam through a one-half inch Grade 50 gusset plate. The gusset plate features an elliptical cut profile designed to provide a minimum six-inch weld length between the brace and plate, secured with a quarter-inch fillet weld. A design preference indicates a taper cut on the HSS beam to maintain a one-inch clearance to the bottom of the beam, with the fabricator to advise if erectable. Three-eighths-inch and quarter-inch fillet welds secure the plates and members, with all welds specified to be ground smooth. Field welds are indicated with standard flags at the connections.
