A typical slotted head track is constructed of cold-formed steel, specified one gauge heavier than the scheduled wall studs. The web of the track features vertical slots measuring 1 1/2 inches by 1/4 inch spaced at 1 inch on center to allow for deflection. A note specifies to screw gypsum board to studs only, keeping fasteners out of the head track to permit independent vertical movement.
