A mechanical pipe or electrical conduit penetrates a one or two-hour rated gypsum board wall assembly through a steel sleeve. Tightly-packed mineral wool insulation fills the opening around the penetration. Firestop sealant is applied to both sides of the wall at the sleeve perimeter. The assembly complies with Underwriters Laboratories system number W-L-1170 for copper tube or pipe penetrations.
