An exterior stair guardrail and handrail assembly mounts to a concrete guardrail wall and painted hollow structural section steel stringer. The guardrail consists of a two-and-a-half-inch by one-and-a-half-inch top rail welded to vertical pickets spaced at four inches on center, with all joints ground smooth and painted. A one-and-a-quarter-inch outside diameter painted steel handrail is welded to the guardrail posts with complete joint penetration welds typically. The structural support incorporates a galvanized steel plank per specifications resting on a painted hollow structural section twenty-by-four-by-one-half steel stringer and steel beam. A field note mandates a watertight continuous weld at splices, and handrails are detailed to comply with California Building Code provisions.
