A forty-two inch high hatch-mounted guard rail is secured to the roof deck around the roof access opening. A self-closing gate is integrated into the railing system and verified to open ninety degrees. A ladder safety system with a telescoping extension bracket extends down through the hatch opening. Clearances are maintained at twenty-one inches maximum at the top and one foot three inches on each side.
