An expansion joint bridges the gap between two structural steel beams supporting a roof deck. The assembly consists of a one-and-one-half-inch metal roof deck topped with rigid insulation and a single-ply membrane roofing system. Two-by-four pressure-treated wood nailers flank the three-inch open joint, which is filled with a two-inch fiberglass insulation filler and sealed with a continuous neoprene closure across the opening. A three-inch foam rod, sized one-and-a-half times larger than the expansion joint, sits within the profile while the roofing membrane extends up and over the foam rod to maintain weather tightness.
