A hollow metal door frame is set within an exterior wall assembly finished with an exterior insulation and finish system over nine-R rigid insulation. An air barrier runs continuously across the wall plane behind the exterior finish. The frame gap is packed with spray foam insulation to prevent thermal bridging and air infiltration. A bead of sealant backed by a backer rod seals the joint between the frame and the exterior finish on the weather side, while sealant is applied to each side at the interior return.
