A single ply membrane roofing system is installed over rigid insulation and a 1 1/2-inch metal roof deck, separated by a 3-inch expansion joint opening over a steel beam. The roofing membrane extends up and over a foam backer rod that is sized 1.5 times larger than the expansion joint. A continuous neoprene closure spans across the opening, positioned between two 2x4 pressure treated wood nailers anchored to the deck. A 2-inch fiberglass insulation filler occupies the space beneath the joint, while the supporting steel beam is detailed per the structural framing plans.
