A fire hydrant connects to a water main via mechanical joint pipe with a six-inch gate valve and standard gate box. The hydrant rests on a twelve by eight by six inch concrete block over compacted gravel fill, backed by a concrete thrust block extending against undisturbed earth. Well-compacted gravel backfill surrounds the buried piping up to the finished grade, maintaining a minimum three-foot offset from the gate box to the hydrant centerline. The hydrant bury line sits below finished grade, with hydrant ports positioned one foot six inches above grade.
