A pipe or duct penetrates a gypsum wall assembly, sealed to maintain acoustical performance. A minimum 43 mil sheet metal escutcheon is set in acoustical sealant against the gypsum wallboard and the penetrating element. Acoustical sealant fills the joint full depth at one-quarter inch to one-half inch width. Long-strand fiberglass pipe or duct insulation with a minimum one-inch thickness is cut off at the gypsum wallboard face, continuing beyond the escutcheon as necessary.
