A vertical control joint occurs in an eight-inch concrete masonry unit wall assembly. Sash blocks are installed on both sides of the joint with one number five vertical reinforcing bar placed in the first cell, which is grouted full. The joint itself is kept entirely free of mortar and accommodates a full-height premolded polyvinyl chloride control joint. A closed-cell backer rod and exterior sealant are applied full height to seal the joint against moisture penetration.
