A 42-inch high guardrail constructed of 1-1/2 inch galvanized steel pipe is anchored into cast-in-place pipe sleeves with a 1-inch exposed surface for fasteners. Balusters are spaced typically at 4-foot on-center intervals, arranged to prevent the passage of a 21-inch sphere. The guardrail is omitted where the retaining wall height is less than 30 inches. The assembly is engineered to resist a linear load of 50 pounds per linear foot in accordance with Section 4.5.1 of ASCE 7 and IBC 2015 standards.
