The expansion joint assembly consists of a half-inch thick felt expansion joint material topped with a half-inch of sealant, centered between two concrete slabs. Number five smooth steel dowels, twenty-four inches long, are spaced at twenty-four inches on center across the joint, with one side wrapped in a bond breaker to allow for movement. Six-by-six ten-gauge welded wire mesh reinforcement is discontinued at the expansion joint. A control joint is formed by a quarter-inch deep saw cut with one-eighth inch width, featuring tooled quarter-inch radius edges. The concrete rests on a ninety percent compacted subgrade, with slab thickness determined by project plans.
