Metal stud furring and gypsum board enclosures surround structural steel columns. The framing consists of one-and-five-eighths-inch twenty-five gauge metal drywall studs with track and blocking, finished with five-eighths-inch Type X gypsum board on the exterior. For one-hour fire-rated columns, two layers of five-eighths-inch Type X gypsum board are required, with the base layer tied to the column using eighteen-gauge wires at fifteen inches on center and the face layer applied with laminating compound over the entire contact surface. Two-and-one-half-inch wide furring studs are specified at walls containing recessed junction boxes.
