A structural steel beam frames into a column top utilizing a column cap plate whose width matches the beam width or column width plus one-half inch, with a thickness matching the beam flange and a minimum three-quarters inch thickness. The connection includes a shear plate with two three-quarters inch diameter A307 bolts at standard gauge per the connection schedule, maintaining a one-half inch gap between the framing elements. Three-eighths inch full depth stiffener plates are welded to each side of the column web with three-sixteenths inch fillet welds. A column cap plate is welded to the column using one-quarter inch fillet welds. The beam is secured to the cap plate with two three-quarters inch diameter A307 bolts at standard gauge on each side.
