A tree is planted in an excavated pit with angled and sloped sides, featuring a root ball set two inches above the finish grade and a trunk flare visible above the mulch. The planting hole has roughened sides and bottom with an auger hole required below, both backfilled with amended topsoil per specification 32 9300 2.2.A. The upper one-third of the wire basket and burlap are removed from the root ball, surrounded by a three-inch mulch taper held back three inches from the trunk base. A plastic root guard is installed in lawn areas. Two vertical tree stakes support the tree via two flexible strap tree ties, each configured as a continuous piece fastened with roofing nails.
