Three five-eighths-inch minimum by 18-gauge cold-formed metal studs frame the opening with double studs at the sides. A C6x16 channel backing plate spans three studs minimum, notched around the studs and screwed in place. Three number 10 flat head sheet metal screws secure each stud to the backing plate. Wall stud flanges remain continuous.
