Hay bale sediment barriers are constructed using stacked hay bales bound with wire or twine, secured vertically with two two-inch by two-inch by thirty-six-inch stakes driven a minimum of eighteen inches into the ground per bale. Bales are embedded four inches below grade with compacted soil on the upstream side. The installation includes general notes requiring sediment removal at one-third barrier height and replacement of undermined sections.
