A shrub is set in a plant pit with angled sides excavated into undisturbed soil, with the top of the root ball positioned two inches above finish grade. The excavation width spans twice the diameter of the root ball and is filled with amended backfill. A three-inch minimum layer of mulch covers the surface while being held back three inches from the base of the trunk.
