An adult size wheelchair averages twenty-seven inches in width to accommodate standard occupant proportions. The required thirty-two inch clear opening provides two and one-half inches of clearance on each side for hands. For two-leaf doors, clear openings must be measured between either door in its ninety-degree open position and the edge of the opposite door.
