The roof assembly features a single-ply membrane roofing laid over rigid insulation and a 1-1/2-inch metal roof deck, supported by a steel beam below. A 3-inch expansion gap between the deck sections is bridged by a continuous neoprene closure strip. Paired 2x4 pressure treated wood nailers flank the opening to anchor the joint edge. A foam backup rod, sized 1.5 times larger than the expansion joint, is compressed into the opening, with the roofing membrane extended up and over the foam rod. Two inches of fiberglass insulation filler fills the void beneath the closure.
