The assembly is framed with two-by lumber and required blocking, protected by two layers of Grade D building paper with all penetrations caulked. A 1 1/4-inch Portland cement mortar bed is reinforced with 2.5-pound metal lath and finished with a Laticrete Hydro Ban or equal waterproofing membrane. The niche base is sloped at 2 percent and finished with Gaco Western UB64 120-mil membrane with a scattered sand finish. Tile or stone is set using Laticrete 254 Platinum thin-set with Laticrete 1500 sanded grout and 1776 grout enhancer. Tempered glass shelves, either 3/8-inch or 1/2-inch Starphire, are installed into back and side grooves, with a decorative stone surround specified per interior design.
